The first page of the Soldbuch 

As you see from the close up (detail below) he was with effect of 1st oct. 44 promoted to the rank of Wachtmeister (equivalent rank to Feldwebel for members of Artillery and Anti-Aircraft units). 

This is because during 1944 Gabriel was transferred to the 5. / Heeres Flak Artillerie Abteilung 308. (5th Battery of Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion 308).  

This unit was formed in Greece mainly from Gebirgsjäger personnel. There main task was not to shoot down aircraft but ground combat - along with the 1. Gebirgs-Division and other units- against Greek and Yugoslavian partisans.
